Vevo’s YouTube Account Hacked Hitting Multiple High-Count Videos

Early this morning, Vevo’s YouTube account became the victim of a hack that saw many of the top-viewed videos on the platform defaced. The most-viewed video of all time, “Despacito,” had its thumbnail replaced with a masked gang holding guns (from Netflix show Casa de Papel) and title changed.

The videos of other artists including Taylor Swift and Shakira (shown below) also fell victim to the intrusion.

One of the hackers claimed on Twitter that it was just a simple script that caused the change, rather than any brute force intrusion into their accounts.

“Vevo can confirm that a number of videos in its catalogue were subject to a security breach today, which has now been contained,” says a spokesperson for the platform. “We are working to reinstate all videos affected and our catalogue to be restored to full working order. We are continuing to investigate the source of the breach.”

“After seeing unusual upload activity on a handful of Vevo channels, we worked quickly with our partner to disable access while they investigate the issue,” a spokeswoman for YouTube told the BBC.

This isn’t the first time that Vevo has been breached. In September 2017, the platform was hacked leading to the theft and leak of many of its videos.

One of the hackers also said that they would take down other accounts including Jake Paul’s and Logal Paul’s if they didn’t reach 40,000 followers by the end of the day. While we’d certainly lament the loss of @NASAHubble and @NASA, I think we can all agree their sacrifice would be worth it.
