David Guetta Reveals “That Same 128bpm EDM” Is Making Him Tired

David Guetta can easily be credited with bringing music into the mainstream. While some might argue Tiesto’s position in that, what with performing at the Olympics in 2004 and what not, it was really David Guetta’s productions with high-profile artists like Black Eyed Peas, Akon, Kid Cudi, Kelly Rowland and more that catapulted the electronic genre into the forefront of mainstream recognition.

Now, years later, Guetta says he’s getting tired of the same old 128bpm sound.

In an interview with The Independent, which was primarily supposed to focus on his forthcoming album – a detail that was revealed in the interview – the real juicy bits were his insights on the island of Ibiza.

Guetta’s place and influence on the White Isle are undeniable; though not nearly as much as, say, Carl Cox, Guetta has definitely left a lasting impression. But he admits in the interview that the more commercial side of EDM has him a bit worse for wear.

“I’m going to be honest, in the two last years that same 128bpm EDM was starting to make me tired. Everybody was playing it,” he said in the interview. Now, he’s happy that Ibiza is starting to appreciate more “underground” sounds, at least compared to some of the more commercial stuff that’s been played.

This, of course, is abundantly interesting coming from one of the champions of commercial dance music.

Guetta recently premiered his new collaboration with Justin Bieber, “2U,” at Ushuaïa Ibiza – a track that bleeds “commercial,” and his sets still largely consist of the 128bpm EDM that he’s so against.

The producer’s statements, at odds with his actions, definitely beg more questions than answers.

For now, Guetta’s album doesn’t have a name or release date, but he assures us it’s on its way. Guetta hasn’t released an album since 2014’s Listen.
