YouTube channel Linus Tech Tips just uploaded a video taking a tour of deadmau5’s home in Canada, and, while we knew Joel was a gear head and overall nerd, we had no idea just how much money he’s put into this home, the tech, and the history.
We’ll go over things in the same order as the video if you want to go along…
First off, the master bedroom… aka, his studio.
Deadmau5’s studio is one of the only Dolby Atmos mix studios outside of Dolby itself. It has nine custom-made speakers positioned perfectly to produce in a 3D space. It’s been under construction for three years… and it’s still not done! The entire room is actually suspended from a past vaulted ceiling for not only improved acoustics, but also so that all of the cables run under the room, preserving its pristine aesthetic.
And moving onto the gear, we have the Neve Analog Console in the center, worth nearly $500,000. He also has two full walls of analog modular synths that he’s collected over the past five years – rare, irreplaceable synths. Additionally, he has over a dozen keyboard synthesizers, even classics like Juno-106 and Jupiter-8 and Prophet-10. But we’re sure that his most prized synth is R2D2, like… the actual synth used to make R2D2 sound effects.
Moving on from the studio, next we hit the LAN center in his basement. This area features 5 custom-built computers from NVIDIA, built to match his cars. Every computer is also matched with a micro-4K camera for game streaming, with the capture machine running under the center console, hooked into a 10 gigabit home network.
Deadmau5 also has his own server room, running a 2 gigabit internet connection, running from a 103-foot tower in his own fricken yard! The server has a custom box running 16 NVIDIA Teslas (starting at about $5,000 each), as well as a massive drive comprised of 45 individual drives, totaling over 70 terabytes of storage.
Of course, this isn’t all just for music production. Deadmau5 and his team use all of this tech for his own graphics and mapping for the cube and mask. When the gaming machines aren’t being used for games, they’re being used as render nodes in addition to the GPUs in server room. In total, there are 43 NVIDIA GPUs (graphics cards) in the house that are all available to be used for rendering.
