Bill to Allow California Cities to Extend Alcohol Service Hours to 4 AM Suffers Major Setback

Californians had hopes of partying a little extra longer at bars, clubs, and venues each night, but the attempt to push back last call to 4 am from 2 am has failed — at least for now.

The proposed bill gained massive support, passed through Senate, and gained over 1,000 supporting signatures in the process, only to be denied. Opposers of the bill first argued it could increase DUIs and alcohol-related incidents, but now lawmakers are convinced further studies are essential to make a proper decision.

Senator Scott Wiener, who backs the bill wholeheartedly, is extremely discouraged, but isn’t going down without a fight. He spoke out about the setback in an official statement released today:

“There’s no need to study anything. There’s nothing radical about letting local communities decide for themselves whether to let their bars and nightclubs go later. It’s embarrassing that California shuts down its nightlife so early. We’re not going to give up. Nightlife matters to our economy and culture, and California’s one-size-fits-all approach to closing time needs to be reformed.”
