A new study has found that magic mushrooms can help battle depression — specifically the psychedelic component psilocybin is able to “reset” the brain.
The research by Imperial College London looked at a small group of 19 participants, all of which were given a single does of the drug. Incredibly enough, half of those patients experienced changes in their brain and ceased to be depressed for about five weeks
The psilocybin directly affected two key areas of the brain…
The amygdala: which is heavily involved in how we process emotions such as fear and anxiety — became less active. The greater the reduction, the greater the improvement in reported symptoms.
The default-mode network: a collaboration of different brain regions — became more stable after taking psilocybin.
Although the study was small without a control group, the findings strongly hint at the importance of pursing the use of mushrooms for depression. Larger studies are still vital in determining if psilocybin will be approved as an official medical treatment.
