Lil Peep’s Brother Opens Up About His Death

Lil Peep’s death has reignited a longtime debate on opiate and drug abuse. Though abuse of Xanax and comparable substances is nothing new, his death was high profile enough to create a ripple effect in the music industry and with mental health awareness groups.

While artists, fans, and haters alike have had their time to speak out with words of wisdom or otherwise, Peep’s family has been understandably silent until now. Speaking with People, his brother Oskar said:

“We [the family] have heard there was some sort of substance he did not expect to be involved in the substance he was taking… He thought he could take what he did, but he had been given something and he didn’t realize what it was… It was an accident, it really was an accident. He was super happy with where he was in life.”

He goes on to compare Lil Peep’s hip hop career to a pro-wrestler, putting on a character for fans.

“He gets paid to be sad,” said Oskar. “He was not as sad as people think he was. It’s frustrating as someone who remembers a happy brother.”

According to Oskar, Peep was proud of the fact that people who were thinking of killing themselves would listen to his music and change their mind, and then message him about it.

“He was helping people, he was not somebody who needed help,” Oskar continued.
