In the midst of increasing pressure to grow its stagnant userbase, Snapchat has just introduced a new redesign to its flagship app that aims to put users back in control of what they see.
It’s a relatively simple change, but one that should please some users who were tired of Snapchat pushing branded content in their face. Essentially, your friends’ content and branded content will now be on different “pages” within the app, meaning that their stories are no longer intermingled. It also brings back auto-advance, so you can watch everyone’s Stories in a row without having to individually load the ones you want.
A small portion of users on iOS and Android will start getting the new update on Friday, and it should be rolled out to everyone within a few weeks.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said in an statement published on Axios:
“With the upcoming redesign of Snapchat, we are separating the social from the media, and taking an important step forward towards strengthening our relationships with our friends and our relationships with the media. This will provide a better way for publishers to distribute and monetize their Stories, and a more personal way for friends to communicate and find the content they want to watch.”
