The Chainsmokers Drop New Song, “Sick Boy”

After releasing their debut album Memories… Do Not Open, The Chainsmokers have been busy touring the world in stadiums on every continent on the planet. While they may not have had any consistent time to work on music, they’ve still found time to complete a new song for 2018 called “Sick Boy.”

Along with a rebrand, 2018 sees a slightly new musical direction for The Chainsmokers. They still haven’t returned to EDM, so if you were holding out for their remixes of old, sorry to disappoint. Drew is still singing, so if you were hoping for a banger instrumental, sorry to disappoint. However, in spite of their pop persistence, “Sick Boy” feels somehow more … genuine … than most of the tracks on MDNO.

The lyrics are a bit cheesy, yes. But the production on “Sick Boy” is also much, much cleaner and of deeper quality than anything on MDNO, as well. The piano is neater, the drums are more crisp, and their direction more clear.

Per the song’s press release, “‘Sick Boy’ is a song about self-identity in today’s world and standing tall in the face of what you can and can’t control.” This week began with news breaking of Alex Pall’s now-ex-girlfriend exposing him for cheating, so it’s somewhat apropos timing.

We’ll still have to hear more music from them before making a final decision about this new direction, but so far, color us intrigued and impressed.

The Chainsmokers – Sick Boy

Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I’m from the East side of America
Where we choose pride over character
And we can pick sides but this is us, this is us, this is
I live on the West side of America
Where they spin lies into fairy dust
And we can pick sides, but this is us, this is us, this is

[Pre-Chorus]
And don’t believe the narcissism
When everyone projects
And expects you to listen to ’em
Make no mistake, I live in a prison
That I build myself, it is my religion
And they say I’m the sick boy
Easy to say, when you don’t take the risk, boy
Welcome to the narcissism
We’re united under our indifference

[Chorus]
And I’m from the East side of America
Where we desensitize by hysteria
And we can pick sides, but this is us, this is us, this is
I live on the West side of America
Where they spin lies into fairy dust
And we can pick sides, but this is us, this is us, this is

[Post-Chorus]
I am, I am, I am the sick boy
I am, I am, I am the sick boy
They say that I am the sick boy
They say that I am the sick boy
And they call me the sick boy

[Chorus]
And don’t believe the narcissism
When everyone projects
And expects you to listen to ’em
Make no mistake, I live in a prison
That I build myself,it is my religion
And they say I’m the sick boy
Easy to say, when you don’t take the risk, boy
Welcome to the narcissism
We’re united under our indifference

[Bridge]
Feed yourself with my life’s work
How many likes is my life worth?
Feed yourself with my life’s work
How many likes is my life worth?
Feed yourself with my life’s work
How many likes is my life worth?
Feed yourself on my life’s work
How many likes is my life worth?

[Chorus]
And I’m from the East side of America
I am the, I am the, I am the sick boy
I live on the West side of America
I am the, I am the, I am the sick boy
And I’m from the East side of America
They say that I am the sick boy
I live on the West side of America
They call me the sick boy
I am the, I am the, I am the sick boy
I am the, I am the, I am the sick boy
They say that I am the sick boy
They call me the sick boy
