We can’t file it into his usual “future bass” category, because Marsh gets out of his comfort zone and into the friends zone with this one. The alluring vocal coos of Anne-Marie and Ed Sheeran-like acoustic strums are sure signs from the get go that Marshmello is taking his production elsewhere.
As Anne-Marie takes the lead, Marshmello lays down a delicate yet assertive beat perfectly fit for the subject matter. “Friends” progresses, and Marsh has a field day experimenting with new sounds and ultimately coming up with a pretty sick pop track. He’s not afraid to get weird with it, layering elements reminiscent of early 2000’s West Coast hip hop, with an updated feel.
