Armin van Buuren, along with the rest of the world, is paying his respects to Avicii.
When he first heard the news, the iconic trance producer was at a loss for words. But, when a phone call came in from Sirius XM he was able to collect his thoughts and express his feelings about the passing of his highly regarded peer.
In the interview below, Armin shares how he relates to Avicii’s situation…
“I recently watched his documentary on Netflix. I told everybody including my mother — this is something you have to watch. This is the big pitfall for everybody.”
Later on, Armin addresses the real insecurities of Avicii, himself, and really, all DJs…
“I guess every DJ, no matter how big or how small, deals with a certain amount of insecurities. In 2010, I myself went to a coach. I went into a very deep hole, because I couldn’t stand all the criticism anymore that I was reading online. I know that the pressure can be huge, especially if you’re a perfectionist. Every artist is a perfectionist. We all read everything that is being said about us. That is the truth. I had a hard time dealing with that.”
He constantly reflects on something his mother told him…
“If you do your best, then that’s the best you can do. If you can tell yourself, ‘I worked hard on this DJ set, I worked hard on this production, I invested all my time and effort into it’, then that is the best you can do y’know, and I guess Tim couldn’t deal with that, in a way. He was always insecure and that’s terrible if you’re that insecure and that you need alcohol to do a performance on stage. I guess everybody deals with it differently and I’m sad that Tim had a hard time dealing with it”.
Armin is urging the dance music community to stop being complacent. If anyone sees a reoccurring issue, within themselves or others, it’s important to reach out…
“I think it’s also a wake-up call for all DJs in the world, you know, stand up and see that this must never happen again.”
Over the years, the two dance music legends exchanged much respect for each other, shared the same management company, took the same stages, even worked on a remix and chatted over the phone together. Armin, from somewhat of a distance, was still able to see the struggles Avicii was battling through the time of his death.
