Tech house DJ Solomun has issued a public apology after an incident that occurred during his performance over the weekend at Kappa Futur Festival in Turin, Italy. Solomun played out a track which contained a vocal sample of the Islamic call to prayer, for which he received many angry comments on social media.
Fellow DJ Dax J was sentenced to a year in prison after doing the same thing at a show in Tunisia last year, which also resulted in the nightclub he performed at getting shut down.
In Solomun’s defense, he stated that he was unaware that the demo contained such a vocal sample, having only received it “shortly before the show.” Upon finding out, he contacted the original producer and advised him to not release nor play out the record anymore. He and his team will also be deleting recordings of the set where possible to make sure this never gets out.
