Denver is making some serious mushroom moves!
The city could become the first in the U.S. to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms, now that a petition has garnered enough support with approximately 9,500 signatures. The next step is to allow voters to decide on the May ballot — make magic mushrooms legal, or not?
The advocacy group supporting the movement, Decriminalize Denver, has 25 days to verify the legitimacy of the signatures. Only 4,726 of the signatures need to be valid to move forward, according to a report.
Psilocybin, the active ingredient so to speak in psychedelic mushrooms, has been known to help with a number of problems, including psychological stress and opioid addiction. However, the substance is still considered a Schedule I category drug, right up there with LSD and heroin.
“We want people kept out of prison, families kept together,” Decriminalize Denver campaign director Kevin Matthews said. “That was the main motivation for this.”
Decriminalizing marijuana really worked out for Denver and the entire state of Colorado. We’ll have to see about this.
