The Hurricane Harvey Challenge might sound rather insensitive if you didn’t actually know what it was, but it’s helping save lives. The challenge in question is to match donations to that of your peers, whether you can do $5 or $50,000. Many A-List celebrities, such as Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, and Jennifer Lopez have offered up $25,000. 3lau is donating all ticket sales to his forthcoming Houston show, amounting around $20,000. Marshmello has just posted a video on Facebook vowing to donate $100,000 to the American Red Cross.
When it comes to donations and helping those in need, the last thing you’d want to do is think of it as a competition. However, when said competition actually inspires others to donate more and more, it can only be considered a good thing.
Marshmello wrote on Facebook:
“Seeing all of the images and videos of the destruction that Hurricane Harvey has caused to the city of Houston breaks my heart. When something tragic like this happens it really affects us all not only as Americans but as people, no matter what race, color, or religion we are. On behalf of the mellogang and myself I will be donating $100,000 to the American Red Cross. I encourage everyone including my mellogang and fellow colleagues to do what they can to help the people of Texas. God bless #mellogang #hurricaneharvey #hurricaneharveyreliefchallenge”
The death toll from Hurricane Harvey has reached 45, and more than 185,000 homes were damaged and 9,000 destroyed as 42,000 people remain in shelters amid overflowing rivers and reservoirs.
