Daft Punk and Phoenix are two of France’s most successful, both critically and commercially, musical exports of the last two decades. But did you know that before both acts really took off, there was a third group called Darlin’ with both members of Daft Punk plus Laurent Brancowitz the guitarist from Phoenix?!
The trio’s heydey came between 1992 and 1993 when they really started putting out tracks for about a year before they all parted ways. Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter would go on to found Daft Punk a year later while Brancowitz would team up with his brother Christian Mazzalai’s fledgling band Phoenix a few years later – and go on to win a Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album 15 years later.
Ironically, the name Daft Punk comes from a review of Darlin’s works which describe the trio’s music as ‘daft punky thrash.’ Talk about inspiration coming from anywhere right?
