In the wake of Avicii‘s death, we’ve learned the Swedish DJ and producer, with a net worth of approximately $85 million (£60.6 million), donated a significant portion to the charity over his lifetime.
In 2012, he went on a 27-date House for Hunger tour and donated approximately $1 million to hunger relief charity Feeding America. Back in 2013, Avicii spoke candidly about his wealth…
“I discovered when I started making money that I didn’t really need it. When you have such an excess of money you don’t need, the most sensible, most human and completely obvious thing is to give to people in need.”
Another charity’s secretary general Anna Hedenmo thanked Avicii for his donations over the years, in a post roughly translated from Swedish to English: “Rest in peace Tim Bergling and THANK YOU because you laid the foundation for Hunger Help with your generous contribution – 1 million euros – to Radiohjälpen.”
Avicii’s family summed up his self discovery in a recent statement, and it makes total sense that he’d find a way to give back in a big way.
“Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions. An overachieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.
“When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.
“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer. He wanted to find peace.”
