Gucci Mane is definitely down with Diplo. If it wasn’t obvious before, an excerpt from the rapper’s autobiography tells all about the direct impact that the Mad Decent producer and the EDM community had on his career — especially when times got tough.
One of the DJs who was championing my music was Diplo. Apparently he was big in this scene.
Hoping to further solidify my place in this world, Todd and Coach sent Diplo my a capellas from the Cold War tapes. He recruited a whole gang of DJs and made Free Gucci, a mixtape with EDM remixes of the best songs from the trilogy. It took off.
The 15-track mixtape meant more to Gucci than anyone knew, until now. Not only is he down with Diplo, but the entire scene. He talks about an appreciation for his alternative fan base, as songs were getting remixed by EDM DJs at big music festivals around the world.
This still rings true. To this day, Gucci Mane’s work is mixed into DJ sets on the regular. He’s even teamed up with Tiësto for an official, upgraded version of “Boom” and Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike for “All I Need.” He’s now become a mainstay in the industry (or should we say Manestay? — sorry had to).
Anyways, check out the legend’s own words about EDM and Diplo below and might as well bump the Free Gucci mixtape while you’re at it!
