29 Out of 30 Most Listened to Tracks of 2017 Are Male Dominated

“Shape of You” by Ed Sheeran, “Despacitio” from Louis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee and “Humble” by Kendrick Lamar were among some of the most played out songs of the year… What do all these tracks have in common?

They were all released by dudes. And as we continue through the most consumed tracks of the year, the results are overwhelmingly male dominated. Nothing against Post Malone, Bruno Mars, Migos, Future, etc. but where are the females at?

Variety’s annual list of most consumed tracks, sadly, only contains one solely female track — Julia Michaels’ “Issues.” Major props to her. Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Alessia Cara and Selena Gomez all make appearances on the list for some of the biggest records of the year, but not without the help of their male counterparts — DJ Khaled, ZAYN, Zedd and Kygo.

Where is Halsey? Kesha? Cardi B? Something about this needs to change because we love our female artists!

Big congrats to The Chainsmokers, who made it onto the list twice with “Paris” and “Something Just Like This,” their collab with Coldplay. Huge shoutout to Kygo and Zedd for working with female vocalists, too!

Check out the full list here, which factors in audio streams, video streams, song sales, radio spins and Shazam tags.
